The Art of Switching Off During and After Working Hours

Iryna Ivanova

Today – while some of us work from home, and some from our offices – it becomes more and more difficult to switch off and disconnect from work. In some cases, our home has become an office and we often end up working without taking breaks and struggling to forget about our projects when we close our laptop.

As a wellbeing advocate – training teams on ways to recharge and de-stress, I remind my customers that balance means combining active performance time with passive recovery time.

So, here are my 3 top strategies for you to create a better work-from-home-life  balance:

  1. Plan and Take breaks every 1.5 hours: I recommend starting your day by planning 15 minutes breaks in your calendar – every 1.5-2 hours. Otherwise, you will be running on low fuel and taking longer to get things done.
  2. Create your own ritual to disconnect from work: to forget about work, you need to do the opposite from what you were doing – sitting and watching your screen – so get active, move, stretch or even do some Relax and Recharge Yoga. The benefit of yoga after work is that it works on your body – stretching and moving, and your mind –  de-stressing and recharging. You can test the benefits of yoga for yourself here – in our Mindspace Relax &  Recharge Yoga for our members
  3. Design an ideal evening routine to sleep like a baby: when preparing to go to bed – do some digital detox, replacing screens of your phone, laptop, the TV behind, with a nice book, soothing shower, or evening meditation.

This is how you optimize your balance and support your body and mind with a good recharging routine. Go ahead and try it for yourself and share it with your team.  Would you like a little bit of help with it? I am happy to come and train your team on the art of switching off.
